    Childhood neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are a group of disabilities related to the functioning of the brain and neurological system. These disorders can cause difficulties with language and speech, behavior, learning, motor skills and related functions. NDDs are a significant medical challenge, affecting 4-6% of the population with life-long disease and accounting for 10% of healthcare expenditures in the U.S. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD), intellectual disability, infantile epilepsy, and cerebral palsy are commonly known NDDs. NDDs are difficult to model in a typical animal system. However, human induced pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) may allow researchers to identify deficits in cellular development and function, examine environmental factors, and screen for drug candidates for these disorders. The CIRM hPSC Repository contains hPSCs representing infantile epilepsy, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, and ASDs. Subjects were recruited to capture the genetic diversity of the conditions and controls, some familial, are well matched in terms of diversity. Cells from the skin biopsy or blood sample collected from patients were reprogrammed using an episomal, footprint-free system. All samples are tied to extensive demographic, medical, and diagnostic information, including results from a comprehensive medical and cognitive assessment.
